Rainbow Colors by Yvonne Pearson

  • 1 min read

This book gently encourages young children to imagine and recognize the items and beautiful colors they can see. From vibrant red to soothing violet, your little one will be immersed in a world filled with colors and meaningful connections to those special items.

Colorful letters spell "Rainbow Colors" on a blue background with stars and swirls. Text includes Yvonne Pearson and Carole Chevalier.

Skills

Throughout the book, the text subtly supports your child's development of print awareness. As you read and explore the colors together, they will be gently encouraged to expand their vocabulary and learn new words and names such as amethyst, yarrow, and lapis lazuli. You can gently foster their background knowledge by discussing the colors and inviting them to share their thoughts when they see each one.

Practices

Read - the items on the page

Talk - ask what color these items might be or share ideas about the items with your little one. Additionally, if you are teaching your child a second language, sharing the color’s name in both languages can be a wonderful way to support their learning.

Play - encourage your child to find items of different colors around them.

Sing - sing the rainbow song or any songs about colors.

Color Challenge

You will need:

  • Construction paper in various colors

  • Toddler and preschool-safe items (I used pom-pom balls, but you use whatever!)

Recommendation! Doing this activity outdoors can be a lovely opportunity for your little one to explore their surroundings in a different setting.

Have your child place outdoor or household items in the corresponding color spots.

Colored sheets with matching pom-poms placed on each sheet—black, blue, green, yellow. Below them is a book titled "RAINBOW COLORS."

This simple activity provides a wonderful way to encourage questions and promote engaging conversations!
