Rain is coming and the animals are spreading the word!
As you read, ask your child if they recognize any of the animals in the book. Encourage them to say their name or what sound they make; this is a great way to reinforce their Vocabulary.
There may even be some animals your child does not know, which creates a great opportunity to share information about the wider world they live in.
This book includes some great sound effect words; emphasize these sounds while reading the book to help build Phonological Awareness (knowing and understanding sounds).
Expand the Reading: Make a Rain Stick!
Supplies Needed:
paper tube
aluminum foil
rubber bands
beads/seeds/rice
coloring supplies
Have your child decorate their paper tube with whatever supplies you have at home.
Writing and drawing with crayons or markers is a great way to build pre-literacy skills and grip strength.
Once the tube is decorated you can use some aluminum foil and rubber bands to close one end.
Use another piece of foil to create a coil and slide it into the tube.
Pour a small amount of beads/seeds/dry beans into the tube. Close the end up like before and turn the stick over.
You'll be able to make sounds like a rainstorm. Sing and dance with your your new nature-inspired instrument!
