Watch Out! There's a Monster Coming! by Karl Newson

  • 1 min read

This book will help you practice talking, reading, and playing with your child. At the end of reading, ask your child what cake they like. What do they think goes into a cake? You can play with your child by going over what goes into a cake or even baking one together.

The skills your child will be learning are narrative skills and print awareness.

Extend the story by talking about cake!

The book shows a green monster skateboarding across the cover, while a child watches with wide eyes. There are index cards with words like vanilla, bugs, dirt, and sugar on the table in front of the book

Supplies needed:

  • Index cards

  • Pen

  • Optional: A cake recipe

On each index card, write an item that should or should not go into making a cake. Spread them out and ask your child to grab what they think goes into a cake. Read the words out loud together and give any details if need be.

Optional: Go over a real cake recipe and read off the ingredients. Ask them if the ingredients they picked up match the recipe or not.
