Libratory Policy

Adopted by the Board of Trustees 09/25/2025

Purpose

The Libratory is a community maker space for individuals with an interest in learning, designing, creating, and making. Instruction, programs, and equipment are provided for use in these pursuits.

Libratory Use

The Libratory is accessible to patrons with a full access card in good standing. Patrons under age 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. Patrons age 14-17 must have parent or guardian permission, but do not require parental or guardian supervision.

Libratory use is by appointment only. Patrons will be required to fill out a Libratory Use Form at their first visit.

Libratory staff may require proof of identity to verify credentials have not been shared with an ineligible user.

Patrons may not create anything that is:

  • Prohibited by local, state, or federal law

  • Unsafe, harmful, or dangerous, or posing an immediate threat to others

  • Obscene or otherwise inappropriate for the library environment

  • Violates another's intellectual property rights including reproducing material that is subject to copyright, patent, or trademark protection.

Lake County Public Library is not responsible for defects or the quality of any of the tools, materials, or equipment supplied by LCPL, or for the quality or condition of a maker's project.

Safety

Patrons must follow all Libratory safety guidelines and use all equipment in a safe and proper manner.

  • Staff reserves the right to restrict access at any time due to a person's inability to operate Libratory equipment in a safe or proper manner.

  • Staff reserves the right to restrict access at any time due to a person's impairment, disregard of safety, misuse, or disruption of another's use.

  • Patrons will immediately discontinue use and notify a staff member if Libratory equipment becomes unsafe or in a state of disrepair.

  • Basic instruction on safety and the use of equipment is provided. Staff will not create projects for patrons. Each patron is responsible for the execution of their own project.

  • Given the specialized purpose of the Libratory, patrons must possess basic computer skills and feel comfortable using a mouse and keyboard. If patrons are unfamiliar with these skills, they may schedule a separate Tech One-on-One appointment with branch librarians to learn the basics before their Libratory appointment.

  • Patrons will follow Libratory-provided documentation and will not adjust settings to equipment or software without prior approval from Libratory staff.

  • Patrons will not attempt to troubleshoot any issues with any Libratory hardware or software.

Time Restrictions

Appointments are limited to 2-hour blocks for all Libratory equipment. Appointment times may be extended at Libratory staff's discretion when no one is waiting to use the equipment.

Costs and Supplies

Use of the Libratory and its equipment is free of charge to all eligible library cardholders. Patrons must provide their own storage media or purchase storage media in the Libratory from the Friends of the Library; patron files will not be saved on Libratory equipment.

Patrons are responsible for all costs associated with materials consumed in the making process. Patron- provided materials must be approved in advance by Libratory staff. Unapproved materials are not to be used in Libratory equipment. Staff has sole and absolute discretion in the approval of patron-provided materials.

3D prints are charged to patron accounts based on the total weight of the material consumed in producing the item.

Loss of Access

Patrons may lose access and/or require retraining on equipment if they:

  • Cause any equipment to be out-of-service

  • Do not follow the equipment usage protocols

  • Demonstrate a lack of basic knowledge or skill required to use the equipment

  • Act in a way that poses a safety hazard to themselves or others

  • Violate the Patron Rules of Conduct, Computer Use Policy, or other applicable library policies.

Repeat violations may result in the temporary or permanent suspension of Library privileges.

Damage to Equipment and Damage to Patron Materials

The Lake County Public Library is not responsible for edited or altered software or for damage to personal computers, audiovisual, or other equipment or personal materials caused by library materials or equipment.

Privacy

The Libratory adheres to all Lake County Public Library Board Policy and Procedures. Libratory computers are programmed to delete files saved by patrons at the end of each day.

Promotional Video Use

The 3D printer is equipped with a camera for capturing remote video of prints in progress. In an effort to promote both the Libratory's offerings and the creativity of our patrons and staff, the library may feature this footage on its website or on its social media pages. To protect patron privacy, no information about the patron will be disclosed in this video.
