In early 2003, the Library joined forces with the Genealogy Search Engine, Indiana Roots.  More than 50,000 Lake and Porter County obituary listings are indexed from the following papers:  Post Tribune (Gary), The Times (Hammond), Merrillville Herald, Lowell Tribune, Sun Journal, and Star Register.  The coverage period runs from the 1960s to mid-1980s with some gaps.  Additional years are planned in the future.  Also, Indiana Roots covers birth, marriage and obituary records for other counties in Northern Indiana (currently only Elkhart County).  Patrons visiting the Central Library can view a printed copy of LCPL's obituaries included in Indiana Roots.
