The town of St. John was founded in 1837 by John Hack, a German immigrant. John Hack (whose name was originally misspelled as "Hawk" on the deed to his land) became the first Postmaster and eventually founded St. John the Evangelist Parish as well. The original log cabin church built by Hack and the other parish families is still standing today!

You can learn more about John Hack and the history of St. John by visiting the St. John Historical Society. We also encourage you to come the the library's Bicentennial events and classes throughout the year to learn more about Indiana history!
