The town of Merrillville - or at least, settlements on this land - started as early as 1834. Before being called Merrillville, the area had various names such as Centerville, Wiggins Point, and McGwinn Village.

Merrillville was eventually named after the Merrill brothers, William and Dudley and grew up alongside other settlements like Ainsworth. Merrillville did not officially become a town until 1971.
